Difficult and costly importation of equipment. Lack of customized parts. Unavailable spare parts, especially in the remote areas where supply chains may be disrupted. These are some of the daily challenges faced by the staff of MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières—Doctors Without Borders). The 3D Printing for All project aims to democratize access to 3D printing and solve some of those challenges by getting 3D printing in MSF's projects, and developing procedures and guidelines on how to use it safely and efficiently. Describing design needs, context, and technical parameters for a CAD expert to make a design is critical to the production of the products that solve problems in the field. For the most part, the people who have the problems to solve do not have engineering backgrounds—and yet they have to provide precise information. Throughout the implementation of the project, we've experienced this communication gap, learned valuable lessons on how to minimize the number of iterations, and saved material and time involved in putting a product in use.

The Autodesk Factory Experience at AU is where attendees get a hands-on experience of the concept-to-production process using Autodesk Fusion software. Last year, the Autodesk team designed and developed a customizable keypad for Autodesk apps, using PCBs, 3D printing, injection molding, and sheet fabrication. Attendees had explored the mini-factory floor and tailored their own keypads with computer numerical control (CNC)-engraved keys with frequently used Autodesk app commands. In this cross-industry collaboration between Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) and the Autodesk Technology Centre in Birmingham, England, we're solving the challenges NWG has maintaining water infrastructure. By employing advanced manufacturing techniques—such as laser scanning, reverse engineering, and hybrid manufacturing—NWG can work with its supply chain to repair broken parts and extend the operating lives of the assets they maintain. NWG is responsible for many assets that were manufactured decades ago, and the original design data is no longer available, causing excessively long lead times for replacement parts. As a result, the downtime for key national infrastructure water systems is prolonged and costly. We will show how this important collaboration between the water and manufacturing industries will reduce the downtime and extend product life, improving NWG's resilience, and ultimately saving money for customers.

The idea was born at a time when the world stopped—the COVID-19 era. Universities and schools were shut, but education found a way and went online, and learning became e-learning. However, this was at the expense of practical hands-on learning experiences. Learn how Curiosity solved this by shipping 3D printers to students' homes! While Fusion was taught online, students 3D-printed projects at home. The design and make journey never stopped. While it's common knowledge that additive manufacturing (AM) has become an integral tool in product development, it can be difficult to know how to fit AM into your workflow. In this talk, we'll discuss how to effectively use AM to accelerate product development and prepare designs to ramp up to production. We will include an overview of the common additive technologies and materials currently used by product designers, and look at the advantages and disadvantages of each from a product development perspective. Viewing your CAD 3D models in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) isn’t something that can be done with a one-size-fits-all, single-click solution. Tessellating, optimizing, and transcoding must be done to convert your CAD (parametric) 3D model into an AR/VR/MR-ready (polygonal) 3D model. CAD models consist of infinitely accurate curves and multiple materials that must be transformed into triangulated representations of these curves with materials converted to textures and baked onto the models for use on devices such as the Microsoft HoloLens. This class will provide a step-by-step demo showing how to convert your 3D CAD models into AR/VR/MR-ready assets using 3ds Max software. We will also show you how to create your own deployable AR/VR/MR application for viewing your 3D models using Unity’s real-time rendering engine and MRTK, the Mixed Reality Toolkit. The speaker has saved companies hundreds of thousands of dollars by producing MR design reviews, and will enable you to do the same.

Inventor iLogic and the API are powerful tools that can be utilized in creating your Inventor templates, along with managing your Inventor files by keeping them up to the latest company standards. In this class, we’ll create one template for multiple drawing sheet sizes and a part template, driven by iLogic rules. We’ll design and create external iLogic rules to check model standards, switch drawing styles, sheet sizes, dimension schemes, and a few other useful tools. This class will demonstrate how the power of iLogic can help you minimize the number of templates you need to create and maintain, along with forcing the user to input standard company iProperties. These iLogic programs will make model and drawing setup a breeze.

The AutoCAD software file format has always fully supported 3D geometry, but it was not until AutoCAD 2007 software, with the introduction of visual styles and commands such as PressPull, that AutoCAD software began to fully capitalize on the power of 3D. In this class we will look at the set of AutoCAD software commands that are well suited to modeling 3D geometry and that will translate well into the STL file format most commonly used by 3D printers regardless of the specific technology employed. Along the way we will discuss effective practices that will help you to produce a successful 3D print.

Composite materials and particularly carbon fiber are some of the hottest materials in the manufacturing world today. Renowned for their high strength-to-weight ratio, carbon fiber parts are becoming more popular in traditional fields such as automotive and construction. Carbon fiber parts are created using additive-manufacturing processes and advanced techniques. Due to their high cost, efficiency is crucial to these kinds of parts. Autodesk, Inc., has created a manufacturing suite for the design, simulation, and manufacturing of composites materials such as carbon fiber. This platform will cover all of the production strategies that are currently in the market, including hand layup, fiber placement, and tape laying. This is an introductory course to the entire platform. Also included is the end-to-end composite manufacturing process. This session features TruPlan.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is bringing new innovations to traditional methods of manufacturing. AM is now being used to manufacture composite tooling, saving composite manufacturers cost and lead time over traditional tooling methods and materials. Composite tooling is typically an expensive process, due to the materials required to survive the various manufacturing processes involved. Tooling is exposed to excessive temperatures, pressures, and forces, causing tools to be unusable after a period of time. Manufacturing problems like warpage can render an expensive tool useless. This course will inform composite manufacturers about which AM methods, materials, and optimization techniques can be used to substitute traditional tooling. It will also cover the various composite manufacturing methods that can take advantage of additive tooling, and how to verify that the tooling will be appropriate for the design manufacturing process.
