Revit 2023 software has completely overhauled the analytical modeling workflow. Now the physical and analytical models have the freedom to act independently. The analytical model elements must be created separately from the physical structure; however, you can still "link" them together. This ultimately gives better control over the analytical model and what it is allowed to represent. These changes are drastic, but don't worry. We're here to help explain how it all works, and have you give it a try in this hands-on lab. You don't need to be a structural engineer or a Revit structural modeler, because we'll show you how you could use the Revit analytical elements to help in the creation of physical walls, physical beams, and many other fun creations. In this lab, we'll also show you how to create your own workflows using Dynamo to customize the automation of the creation of the analytical elements.

A cross-industry technology fusion! We used Autodesk Generative Design software to create an adaptive connector bracket for robot-operated 3D scans of ancient structures. ReCap software and Dynamo helped us study traditional construction methods and enrich our restoration efforts. This report covers our process in Autodesk Fusion 360 software, including entering design parameters and extracting constraints from the historical site. It explains how we turned the bracket's requirements into criteria for rapid iteration and selection, quickly finding the best solution. It also explains how ReCap processed robot-collected point cloud data to investigate architectural principles and features of ancient buildings in Southern China. Finally, it describes how Dynamo converted these insights into automated building information modeling (BIM) scripting, bridging historical knowledge with modern technology for efficient restoration practices.

Data-driven design in architecture has the potential to drastically enhance the quality of projects. It's not solely focused on enhancing the end result; data-driven design also streamlines the architectural process itself. It goes further than just streamlining tasks; it's about improving the quality of living environments and assuring sustainability. In this session, we'll tell the story of the journey involved in designing a residential building. By combining data from various sources, we looked at the most-optimal options for a case we studied in Warsaw, Poland. Among these sources are passive solar design, green roofs, wind analysis, building materials assessment, energy use efficiency, resource conservation, and waste reduction—reducing carbon footprint. Additionally, we incorporated some urban-scale geographic information system (GIS) data. All of that would not be possible without Autodesk Forma software, which played the critical role. For us, the role of an architect will never be the same after this journey.

Challenging the deconstruction and decontamination of a former industrial site: the refinery of Dunkerque in France. From a huge data sets of 30 000 old plans and a dynamic scan of a 90Ha area, the low LOD Revit models were made manually but also automatically using IA with image recognition. The representations of the contamination and lithology is modelled with voxels and informed using interpolation scripts with Dynamo directly from georeferenced boreholes stored in excel datasheets. The aim of this BIM model is to create scenariis of depollution depending of what is located underground : pipes, concrete and pollutants.

Road infrastructure consists of many simple elements—road signs, traffic barriers, traffic lights, and so on. Creating and placing them separately in large infrastructure projects can be very labor intensive. In this technical presentation, we’ll demonstrate how to automate the creation of an intelligent model for road infrastructure using Dynamo scripts and universal Revit families. This class will teach you how to organize a geographic information system (GIS) system of a traffic management plan in Civil 3D software and effectively transfer it to an InfraWorks model. Learn how to set up an effective link between a 2D plan and the consolidated intelligent model in accordance with the information embedded in the vector objects. We’ll also cover the creation of parametric barriers in Inventor software for InfraWorks, and how to apply parametric barriers for component roads in InfraWorks. See a demonstration of the Dynamo script that places barriers on the appropriate position in the consolidated model in accordance with the attributes of the barrier’s points from the 2D plan.

In this context, computational design has emerged as a key enabler of the circular economy by optimizing material usage and reducing waste.

Building configurators are essential in the industrialized construction (IC) space. By using tools like Dynamo with Revit software, we can efficiently create an assembled building using basic design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) assumptions. A configurator enables us to quickly search libraries for company assemblies and their parameter values, suggest previously engineered products (assemblies), and place these suggested products in their assumed project locations. Using this tool reduces a three-week process to one hour, and it unifies data with design, all while creating a reliable model. In this class, you'll learn the techniques involved in building a configurator with Revit and Dynamo software. You'll also learn how to evolve the process for continuous optimization, create custom searches for your products, filter methods that mimic DfMA logic and how to consume other massing inputs. Lastly, we will share lessons learned in our own experiences building configurators and discuss what resources were needed.

In this class, you'll learn how to use generative design in Civil 3D software through Refinery. Starting with the prerequisite packages and initial setup, you will discover how to create a Dynamo graph for generative design purposes. You'll also learn how to create a study, assign methods, set constraints, and explore outcomes. This class assumes basic knowledge of Dynamo for Civil 3D. Join this class and take your design skills to the next level.

This session will present a workflow between Inventor and Revit software using Dynamo as an automation tool for production. Our firm has an extensive history of using Inventor for bridge infrastructure modeling and using programming to automate production. Structural concrete or steel, reinforcement, bolted connections, and construction details are represented in our parametric models. Our firm chose Inventor as a primary 3D production tool due to its short learning curve with new 3D modelers, approachability, and native parametric functionalities. However, to be within a building information modeling (BIM) environment for collaboration with partnering firms and clients, we pushed these Inventor models into Revit using a combination of location data from our analysis models and Dynamo inside Revit. With this workflow, we can automate the assembly of our Revit intelligent model, establish Inventor as a BIM support tool for modeling within the production team, and retain our firm's Inventor assets for future BIM projects.

The East Bank project—located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, United Kingdom—provided a rare opportunity to push the boundaries of what's possible in terms of building information modeling (BIM) collaboration and digital delivery. With more than 280 live intelligent models across five buildings, Allies and Morrison, BuroHappold, and Mace had to establish a digital strategy that could facilitate collaborative working across an international team, with a wide range of skills across 70 design and construction teams. This presentation will start from the humble beginnings in the early concept stages, and will take you through the evolution of the BIM strategy over eight years. We'll touch on everything from the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in the design process to complex 3D coordination exercises before the fabrication of building components. Finally, we'll present our use of data analytics platforms to track the development of building asset data, for use in the operation of the buildings.

This class will showcase a connected data workflow used to deliver large water and sewer infrastructure projects from design to commissioning. This is accomplished with a systematic use of Civil 3D software and ArcGIS integration, asset data governance, and Industry Foundation classes (IFC) for digital-twin commissioning. The sewer and water designs are first developed in Civil 3D. Dynamo and Python are used to attach a class library as property set data and generate a spreadsheet model database. The spreadsheet is linked to an Esri geodatabase through geoprocessing and Python. This geodatabase is updated with field-collected attribute data and as-built data via Esri Field Maps. The computational process is reversed to update the spreadsheet and subsequently the Civil 3D model. The model is delivered as-built, and an IFC version containing the asset data is exported for the owner's digital-twin ecosystem.

With rising material costs and razor-thin margins, construction takeoff—including accurate material quantification and cost estimates—is essential to starting and executing jobs on budget and on time. Autodesk Takeoff, with centralized 2D and 3D takeoffs, allows estimating teams to update quantities in real time, using the most up-to-date design files. By connecting existing building information modeling (BIM) data, Autodesk Takeoff can reduce takeoff and estimating times by 25% or more, minimize the risk of missed quantities, and guarantee accurate data capture. In this technical instruction, Edwin Bailey (senior preconstruction technology manager at Skanska) will showcase the workflows, techniques, and best practices for using Autodesk Takeoff, with real-world examples from Skanska's Class A Montrose project in Houston, Texas, among other examples.

Mandai Bird Park Project is an innovative sustainable-construction initiative in Singapore designed to create Asia's largest bird park in a 23-hectaire nature reserve. The design consists of eight massive walk-through aviaries inspired by diverse habitats, 20-meter-tall waterfalls, and an 84-meter-long archway. As part of the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan, the team had to keep in mind sustainability and preservation goals to minimize changes to the original landscape topology, preserve existing flora and fauna, and replicate a tropical landscape incorporated within the architecture. This intensified the overall construction complexity. The class will show how we fully used building information modeling (BIM) as a single source of truth, reality capture. and cloud platforms, including drone mapping, laser scanning, and 3D surface modeling with Revit, Navisworks, Dynamo, and ReCap software throughout the virtual design and construction (VDC) implementation. This saved us 30% in survey costs, achieved 100% reuse of excavated soil, and prevented the aviaries from clashing with the trees.

We all understand the power Civil 3D brings when creating roadway corridors. How about the efficiency Dynamo adds? Now add in the Generative Design functionality to your corridors, and you have something worth sharing with the community! Using out-of-the-box Civil 3D functionality, we've created a monster! That's right, we've created The Corridor Optimizer! Instead of building a single corridor model, we create hundreds—even thousands—of corridors, in search of THE corridor alternative. With every corridor created, we extract the quantities. Not just our end-area-based corridor quantities, but quantities representing the existing corridor elements that would be impacted by each of these thousand or so corridor alternatives. Once we have quantities, the real excitement begins! Input our pay item unit prices, and we generate costs. Input construction production rates, and we have a schedule! Carbon values? Technology in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is changing rapidly. To keep up with this accelerated pace, VHB is stating that our default design practice will be model-based design (MBD) by 2025. This means training 800+ Civil 3D users in more-automated, connected, and advanced workflows. We recognize that to create this large-scale shift we need to train a generation of innovative and inspiring coaches to help guide others through this change. Advanced MBD Training was created to mold 10% of our Civil 3D users into MBD Project Coaches. As MBD Project Coaches, they'll be expected to advance MBD from automating processes to creating more-efficient workflows. The training will focus not only on our core tool, Civil 3D, but it will also include Dynamo, InfraWorks software, Subassembly Composer, Grading Optimization, ArcGIS Connector, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Twinmotion. This session will walk through how we built and implemented this program to accelerate change at VHB.

Corridors are a crucial aspect of many Civil 3D models, but they can sometimes be time consuming to create, modify, and manage. This class will explore how Dynamo for Civil 3D can be used to improve efficiency in all aspects of corridor design and management. This class will cover workflows for corridor creation, corridor geometry manipulation, subassembly management, quantification, and style management. We'll explore how to use the Python node to interact with corridors using the Civil 3D .NET API, expanding upon the functionality of existing nodes.
