Since early 2019, Arcadis has provided traditional client-requested visualizations. As a leading AEC company and Autodesk Partner, Arcadis wanted to enhance its visualization capabilities through a new digital workflow integrating immersive worlds and mixed reality in its mobility business. The convergence of media and entertainment with the AEC industry through technology marks a transformative shift in both sectors. This case study will showcase a new and innovative tool that Arcadis and Autodesk Consulting have developed. The tool is a significant enhancement in the interoperability between 3ds Max and Civil 3D software, with new features that will substantially shift the gamification efficiency in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) and infrastructure sectors. The interoperability features boost faster integration, reduce manual tasks, and decrease task time by more than 50%, leading to more-streamlined communications, more-efficient processes, and an increase in productivity and delivery. The transformation includes the creation of a new AutoCAD command, the development of a new add-in utility for AutoCAD and 3ds Max 2024 software, and an advanced approach to transforming CAD 2D infrastructure and AEC designs into 3D animated scenes. This advanced and innovative approach will pique your interest and open new possibilities for your visualization work.

The architecture, engineering, and construction industry has a long history of using 3D tools for design and planning. Such tools are built for handling large quantities of data, but tend to focus more on physical accuracy than visual fidelity. While new tools are emerging to visualize projects in high-quality 3D before they're built, they're typically solutions that can't easily be extended to work with all the new technologies driving innovation in the video game industry. In this session, we'll cover techniques we've developed for rendering large architectural and infrastructure environments in real time. We'll discuss the challenge of importing these models into the Unity gaming engine, as well as the opportunities it affords in terms of improving fidelity, adding interactivity, and building for multiple platforms, including virtual reality (VR). We'll also discuss practical applications for these techniques, such as multi-user review sessions, public feedback gathering, and interactive training building.

This class will be an amazing experience. We will show you a new way to use 3ds Max software and other computer graphics (CG) tools in collaboration with historians, such as Egyptologists, to reconstruct heritage architecture and other monuments. The class will consist of two parts. The first part will be a quick review of the ancient Egyptian tombs, the way they were built, and why they have been destroyed. The second part will address techniques used for CG reconstruction of a masterpiece—the tomb of Nefertari. You'll see the complete workflow from idea to final visualization. We’ll show how textures were reconstructed in Adobe Photoshop, and how 3D models were created and textured in 3ds Max software, then lit and rendered using Corona Renderer. This reconstruction was presented for a 360-degree clip for planetarium use and a stereoscopic clip for National Geographic.

Lighting design has always been a difficult discipline to communicate; it’s a challenge for clients and project teams to produce the lighting design in their mind’s eye. This is especially applicable with refurbishment of cultural arts and heritage projects, where the complexity and intricacy of such internal spaces makes the way in which light interacts with surfaces and finishes particularly difficult to convey. From the outset, we've been keen advocates of using visualization tools, such as 3ds Max software, to demonstrate the lighting approach with clarity and photometric accuracy, using a range of 3D mediums—from traditional “static” images to in-house developed interactive tools and experimentation in virtual reality (VR) to “show and tell.” In this session, we’ll provide an overview of these visualization processes through selected case studies of our heritage projects for the likes of Historic Royal Palaces UK, as well as University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

This presentation will showcase how a collaborative design approach enabled the project team to deliver a high-quality interactive application on Wembley Park, London. The partnership between 3ds Max software and Unity 3D Technology will feature in this talk, and we’ll focus on how a 7 billion polygon, 3D masterplan model can be displayed interactively, enabling design teams to have a down-to-the-wire approach to uncompromised visual quality. Wembley Park is one of Europe’s biggest regeneration projects with 8,400 homes. The 8.8 million-square-foot mixed-use project is being developed by the multi-award-winning developer, Quintain.

Generally, the Design Automation API enables you to integrate an automated batch processor into a pipeline to process files in the cloud. In the Design Automation context, Revit software, AutoCAD software, and Inventor software generally work with native file formats; but in the case of 3ds Max software, the list of file formats that we can import and work with is more extensive. This traditional strength of 3ds Max—of importing and working with a huge number of file formats—opens the way for multiple workflows, including visualization. In this class, we will present an overview of some possible Design Automation rendering workflows, as well as discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each workflow. We will explore the benefits with a pros-and-cons approach, including costs (time and credits), which will help you decide the ultimate approach and benefits.

Godrej Storage Solutions is the largest intralogistics solutions provider in India and in Asia abroad. It deals with projects that are unique and customized. The major output is a general arrangement drawing of the warehouse layout. Due to its complex nature, the designs are prepared in 2D layouts and reviewed by customers. This process involves multiple iterations before the customer gets a complete idea about the proposal. After many such iterations, technical sign-off happens but with the uncertainty of an error-free solution. To reduce this long cycle time and for better visibility for the customer, the Godrej design team makes 3D walk-through videos of a complete warehouse with all civil details. This helps the stakeholder to virtually visualize the full warehouse facility during the design stage itself and ensures no conceptual errors. Another aspect of the project business is that the project location and decision makers are not co-located. Hence, visualization helps them making timely and accurate decisions.

Let’s take a look at how we can use 3ds Max software in photo shoots for advertising campaigns. We used 3ds Max to help The Sunday Times produce campaigns for Kia Motors and Grundig. 3ds Max helped us meet publication deadlines that wouldn't be possible with photography. When sourcing and constructing sets was unfeasible, 3ds Max stepped in. Using interactive rendering alongside a photographer, we placed influencers in their dream kitchens. After putting four influencers into virtual sets, we conducted a car shoot with a specific shoot location but without the car (the Kia e-Niro release was imminent and the car was not in the country). In this talk, you will learn how we used computer-generated imagery (CGI) to complement photography, and how we used interactive rendering for instant feedback, saving hundreds of hours in production by using 3ds Max.
